Labor is expensive. DPUs have replaced manned helper locomotives on Tehachapi Pass, thus the helper spur as been removed. The new signal at left has no moving parts, and is cheaper to maintain than the older searchlight signal at right. Soon enough, line side signals in any form will be obsolete. (Bena, CA)
